Six months on: Little sign of improvement in Gaza since Israeli ‘easing’ of blockade.
November 30, 2010: Israel’s measures to ‘ease’ the illegal blockade of Gaza in the face of significant international pressure have done little to change the plight of Gaza’s civilians, says a report published today by an international coalition of 21 development, human rights and peace-building organisations. The EMHRN expresses deep concern over the situation in Laayoune following last week’s clashes
November 17: The attack against the camp at Gdeim Izik near Laayoune led to unacceptable levels of violence. The camp was set up by thousands of Sahrawis who were protesting against the deterioration of their living conditions. Although they were not using firearms, the raid conducted by security forces to evacuate and destroy the camp proved to be dangerous and disastrous. The number of fatalities announced by the Moroccan authorities (10 members of the security forces and two civilians), the as-yet undetermined number of people who were injured and the number of people detained (more than 150) are ample evidence of the degree of violence used in this confrontation. The state of utter devastation in the camp following the raid by the Moroccan security forces also confirms the high level of violence of their intervention. Following these events, the city of Laayoune witnessed further clashes that led to numerous arrests as well as more violent and equally unacceptable confrontations. ... Full story
