Frameworks in which EU relations with Mediterranean countries are taking place

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM)

The Union for the Mediterranean, officially known by the full name of Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean (BP:UfM) and previously known as the "Mediterranean Union" , is an international organisation created on 13 July 2008 by the so-called Paris Declaration. It constitutes a second phase of the Barcelona Process, as it replaces the existing (since 1995) Euromediterranean Partnership.

The Union for the Mediterranean unites all EU members with several non-EU countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, for a total of 44 members.

The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (EMP)

The Euro-Mediterranean Conference of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, held in Barcelona on 27-28 November 1995, marked the starting point of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, a wide framework of political, economic and social relations between the Member States of the European Union and Partners of the Southern Mediterranean.

The EU Strategic Partnership with the Mediterranean & the Middle East

Adopted in June 2004, it provides a policy framework for these two regions with a view to promoting political, economic and social reform, generated from within the affected societies, as well as contributing to their socio-economic development.
